How does tennis work with teams?
Each team has 8 players. The doubles pairings can change each week, so you do not always have the same partner each week. Pairings can be same-gender or mixed doubles.
What is the Scoring System?
Each match consists of a single set played to 8 games. The standard “win-by-two” still applies, so a tiebreak is played at 7-7.
Each game uses standard tennis scoring but with no-ad. This means a deciding point is played at deuce.
Instead of 15/30/40 scoring, we use 1/2/3. So 3-3 is the equivalent of 40-40 (or deuce)
What times will I be playing?
This depends on your Captain and your individual availability. Your Captain will send out each week’s schedule ahead of time.
The standard start times for matches are:
7pm
7:45pm
8:30pm
9:15pm
But matches may start later than planned because the previous went longer than expected. The lights go off automatically at 11pm, so if the matches are long, then there is a chance that the last match of the night may not finish.
Please be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled match time in case matches can start earlier.
What if I am on vacation, sick, injured, or otherwise cannot play that week?
That’s OK! We know this is summer and people have other plans.
If you cannot play on a certain week, then please let your Captain know as far in advance as possible.
We have four people playing each match, so scheduling can sometimes be a challenge. So giving your Captain some advance notice is helpful to avoid last-minute scrambling.
You may also be asked to sub for a player who is absent. This happens frequently, so some players end up playing 2x a night or even more!
What do I need to bring?
Bring your racket, water, good luck charms, and anything else to play your best!
OTT will supply the balls each week.
Can I bring food or something to drink?
YES!! Part of the fun of OTT is the social atmosphere. We encourage everyone to bring snacks and food to share with your fellow players. Players will often hang out before and after their matches to socialize. Here is the schedule of “Food Themes” for each week.
